What is the relationship between Hermano Pedro Foundation USA and Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro in Guatemala?

In 2001, Hermano Pedro Social Works Foundation, USA was founded to function as the United States fundraising and communication arm of the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro. The current Director of Obras Sociales in Guatemala always serves as the President of the US Foundation Board of Directors and both US and Guatemalan citizens serve on the US Foundation Board as volunteers. In addition to providing financial and fundraising support to Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro, the US Foundation has the goal of communicating with US supporters, many whom have visited or volunteered there. Thanks to volunteers, board members, close collaboration with Obras and Amigos Pro Obras and the generous administrative support from the Franciscan Mission Associates, the Foundation has minimal overhead and no employees, so donations go directly to Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro’s outreach programs and services. The two separate organizations work closely and share the same goals.

Can I donate online?

Yes, you can donate online to support the charitable work being done in Guatemala at www.hermanopedrofoundationusa.org in our secure protected site. Your donation will be recorded and processed by the Franciscan Mission Association and will be directed to Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro in Guatemala monthly. The Franciscan Mission Assn. provides this service free of charge.

Where does my online donation go?

Your online donation (hermanopedrofoundationusa.org) goes directly into the US bank account of Hermano Pedro Social Works Foundation, USA, the US fundraising arm of OSSHP. Once a month the donations are sent to Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro in Antigua, Guatemala. Once in Antigua, the funds are allocated “where needed most” to support the health care and residential care programs in Antigua and other parts of the country unless the donor specifies a special project or purpose. The Franciscan Mission Assn. in New York processes all donations and facilitates all accounting at no charge to the US Foundation.

Is it possible for me to volunteer in Guatemala?

Yes! There are many ways to get involved, ranging from joining a medical, surgical or dental team to holding babies at the nutritional center. Long term, short term and small volunteer groups are welcome. All volunteers and groups are subject to pre-approval by appointment, so please call, email or stop by the Obras first to apply and find out more. The approval process may take several days. Since the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro strives to keep both residents and volunteers healthy, there may be some restrictions to volunteer opportunities at this time. Who is eligible and how can I get help at Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro in Antigua?

The doors at Obras Sociales are open to all, regardless of race, language, religion, sex or creed. It is possible for anyone living in Guatemala who needs medical help to approach the Obras. The process is to first call the main number (512) 7931 2100. If your needs are general medicine for adults or children, ask when you should come in. Normally there are no appointments given for general medicine and children, and it is first come/first serve open appointment clinic every morning. Call to confirm when the clinic will be open since Covid restrictions may apply. Normally children are seen in the open appointment clinic in the mornings and then referred for additional consultation if needed. If you know that you need Orthopedic (bone) surgery, ask for an appointment in the Orthopedic Clinic; if you Know that you need general surgery, ask for an appointment for the General Surgery Clinic. The telephone receptionist will direct you to the appropriate clinic. Cost for services will be decided upon after talking to a social worker who will help you determine your ability to make a donation to support the care given at the facility. The donation patients are ask to make for services depends on many factors, including income. **Very Important! Please bring your Identification, personal documents, xrays, medical reports and the names of medicines that you or your child is taking now or have taken in the past.

The Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro’s annual budget averages $8.7 Million and it is a solvent institution in all of its commitments. The financial audits carried out by the Guatemalan government reflect an honest and transparent organization. It is one of the most respected nonprofits in Guatemala. Both institutions are also held accountable by their independent Boards of Directors who meet regularly to discuss and analyse all programmatic and financial aspects of the organizations.
